Castello di Petrata

Assisi — Perugia

rito civile durante un destination wedding al Castello di Petrata

Five kilometres from Assisi, set within fifty hectares of olive groves, orchards and woodland. Family-run in the best sense: genuine care, none of the rigidity of a hotel.

Castello di Petrata dates back to 1340, originally built as a villa along the Franciscan path between Assisi and Gubbio, then converted into a fortress in the 15th century. Today it's one of the most sought-after venues for international destination weddings in Umbria — and it's easy to see why: the view over the Perugia plain and Assisi stops you mid-frame.

I've photographed here several times and each time there's something different: the May blossom, the red ivy on the walls in autumn, the light shifting with the seasons. It's a generous venue for a photographer.

HOW I WORK HERE

Photographing a wedding at Castello di Petrata

Light here is the first ally. The castle faces west — sunset hits the walls full-on and creates an oblique, warm light that turns any moment into something memorable. I work mostly with available light: I want the photos to tell this place exactly as it is.

The inner cloister is my favourite spot for portraits: filtered light, an intimate setting, ancient stone. The park and the olive groves are perfect for the couple's walk — space, room to breathe, nothing to clutter the frame.

I work with the Realwed™ Method: no rigid poses, no theatrical direction. I observe, I anticipate, I shoot when something happens. The result is photos that look stolen — in the best sense of the word.

THE METHOD

I don't follow a style: I follow you

The Realwed™ Method is not a formula. It's a way of working on the field: present without being intrusive, attentive without being directive. Every couple is different, every venue has its own light, every day has its own pace. I adapt — not the other way around.
