Twenty people seated around a single table in the middle of an open field. No stage, no special effects. Just candles, flowers, and the sky above. Why I photograph details even though I don’t work with posed shots

One question I get often: if I work without poses and without building scenes, do I still photograph the details? The answer is yes. Always. But with a specific logic.

I don’t photograph details like a checklist. I don’t walk around the venue with a list — place cards, favours, centrepieces, next. I photograph them when they tell something. When the flower on the table shares the same palette as the bride’s dress. When the rings are resting on a book that means something. When a handwritten place card says more than any speech could.

Then, during the day, I return to the details in the quiet moments. When the couple moves from one space to another. When guests are seated and the couple has a still moment. Those five minutes when no one is watching are often the best for details — because even the flowers, with no one around them, tell a different story.

The result is not a catalogue. It is part of the story.

It’s not essential, but it helps. If there is something you care about particularly — a family object, an installation you spent months designing — I arrive with that awareness already active. Otherwise I read the space when I get there and decide in the moment what is worth telling.

There is no fixed number. It depends on the day, the richness of the styling, and how many details have a story worth telling. Do you photograph details even without a professional stylist?
